Despite Renewed Attention, Pregnancy and Childbirth Still Deadly Across Arizona

Women of color in the state are dying at 3-5 times the rate of their white counterparts during and after pregnancy. Mental health conditions caused about a third of pregnancy-related deaths in Arizona from 2018 to 2019. The rest of the country follows a similar pattern, where mental health and substance abuse are the leading causes of maternal deaths, followed by excessive bleeding, and cardiac and coronary conditions.

Medical studies reveal that after giving birth, one in ten women in the United States experience postpartum depression. Recently, the FDA approved a new pill to treat this condition. However, the high cost of medicine makes it challenging to access.

PSI-AZ and Arizona Birthworkers of Color cohosted the impactful training series. Over 100 perinatal providers were trained so are able to provide culturally appropriate, informed care for families experiencing Perinatal Mood Disorders.
